If you change lives, organisations, you need power says Jeffrey Pfeffer, professor of organisational behaviour at Stanford University in a video interview. Discussed here are the seven qualities required to acquire power and influence in the organisation.

There are only two sources of power. The first is the personal qualities that you can develop.

Ambition

Ambition is one of the most important stepping stones to power. It requires plenty of hard work to achieve success in competitive situations and hard work is possible only if you are sufficiently motivated by the desire to achieve something. So ambition is fundamental as it is the motivating force to expend the effort required.

Confidence

All emotions are contagious and confidence even more so. When others see your confidence, they believe that you know what you are doing, be more interested in doing what you want them to do.

Act like a leader. Body language is very important. having an expansive posture makes you more confident and people will react differently. Acting and speaking skills are equally important. so also the ability to convince and persuade others, choosing the right words. All of them are equally important in the influence process and they follow naturally if you have acquired the required skills and are seen to be very confident.

Persistence

Everyone is going to face setbacks. Successful people are more persistent and resilient in the face of setbacks and wear down the opposition be persisting with it

Energy

Energy is contagious. People get attracted to others with high energy. People feel more energetic when they are around high energy people. So you have to outlast and outwork other people and always exhibit high energy to motivate those around you.

Empathy

When you want to influence others you need to understand what makes them tick, choose proper words, craft a message in a way that meets your requirements. In short show empathy.

People evaluate you by what you get done and not necessarily if you are likeable. DO not worry about making everybody happy, else you will not achieve much.

Honesty?

Authenticity gives people an excuse not to change, not adapt. Instead of being true to yourself, be true to what the other people want from you.

Put up a positive face in the face of adversity. Have the ability to convince people to stay with you.

Accept

We see every day that many things that take place are not fair or just. So, accept people as they are. With sufficient sagacity, you can go beyond your feelings, be clinical about how people behave, how to influence them and get them to your point of view, in order to achieve what you wish to achieve.
