Working remotely could potentially provide more effective if you continue to work from home and the uncertainty is removed from your life and the restrictions are eased out.
Adopt these strategies when working from home and increase your overall productivity.
- Covert your travel time to productive work: The time saved from commuting can be better utilized by converting it into exercise typically in the morning and a leisurely walk in the evening with the family. This will improve your physical health as well as have positive benefits on your mental health and family.
- Block focussed time: In offices even if you block off your calendar for focussed work colleagues may drop by and there may be sudden meetings on the fly making it difficult to have focussed unbroken time. At home, you are distanced from your colleagues and you can block of productive time and implement it regularly without any danger of being interrupted.
- Schedule meetings: Ask your colleagues to schedule meetings with you so that you can effectively plan tasks around it and you can distribute your time across meetings and your work judiciously. Meetings can be short 15-30 minutes and for longer meetings schedule it for a suitable time in your calendar
- Update status: TO keep yourself fully focussed on your work during your focussed time, update your status as away on your IM channels and mute all notifications to reduce all interruptions during your work. it will also enable your colleagues to know your status at any given point of time. But the status update must be made regularly and followed rigorously to instil validity to the status as otherwise it may be ignored when the actions prove otherwise.
- Do not get self-distracted: When external disturbances are minimised we may some times inadvertently search for ways to get distracted. This is especially true for extroverts who have a very low tolerance to a calm environment. In such situations look for ways to increase your motivation - playing music in the background, using a standing desk or putting your workstation on a high counter so you are forced to concentrate or giving yourself short breaks between productive times.
All these things will help you feel less bored in your environment and also keep you away from the time-sucking social media diversions.
